Introducing Formula to a Breastfed
2 Month Old

I have a 7 1/2 week old baby who has only been fed breastmilk thus far. I plan to return to work in 4 weeks and I will be stopping breastfeeding completely. I want to slowly introduce formula over the next couple of weeks to make the transition easier and hopefully find the right formula. How should I slowly introduce formula over the next couple of weeks and what type of formula should I begin with?

The cessation of breast feeding can be a sensitive subject. Realize that you do not have to stop breast feeding when you return to work.  Some women are able to nurse in the evenings and weekends. My guess is you are aware of this option and have decided to stop nursing for other reasons.

I would recommend you introduce bottles as soon as possible (even if they contain breast milk). Some breastfed infants refuse to take bottles as it is different than nursing. If your baby is able to take a bottle this transition should go well.

It is best to wean down slowly from breast feeding as it will be easiest on mother and baby. I would recommend starting with a milk based formula like Similac Advanced or Enfamil Premium.
