Breastfeeding on Demand vs
on a Schedule

I was wondering what you (and/or your wife) believe as far as breastfeeding on demand vs. more on a schedule.  Our 4 month old WAS doing really well sleeping through the night without nursing, but has now 'reverted' (after being sick).  I've been letting her nurse on demand lately in an attempt to increase my milk supply, which I feel is low.

In general, we keep a “loose schedule”. We work toward a schedule, but work with the baby to get there. I do not believe in complete on demand feedings (at this age) or strict parent directed feedings. During and shortly following illness we often ended up more toward the “on demand” side. I would not feed a 4 month old more that every 3 hours. Stick with a rigid bedtime routine (add link) and try not feed her when she wakes a night. If after bedtime you have to feed or hold her do as little as you can. As children recover from illness they typical feed better which should in turn help your milk supply. With time and persistence you should be sleeping and back to a more normal schedule soon.
