Taking a Baby to the Beach

baby on the beach

We were wondering when it's safe to take a baby to the beach and let them play in the water.  We have a 9 month old and some friends told us that babies shouldn't go to the beach until they are 2 because the water isn't safe for them. Obviously, we're not talking about long periods of time in the water, just a few minutes here and there.

Go for it! Our family loves the beach. The beach provides activities for all ages. I agree that the beach does have more potential dangers than a trip to the pool. However, these hazards are manageable and the benefit is a great family outing.

After your question, I searched the American Academy of Pediatrics website for any recommendations. I could not find any beach specific warnings or recommendations.

She will definitely need sunscreen, increased amount of fluids and close observation. You may consider bringing something to provide her shade and even limiting the first trip to a few hours.
