Wipes for Newborns

We were told by a nurse at the hospital not to use wipes on our baby. Do you recommend baby wipes or wash clothes for newborns?

In our hospital, wipes are discouraged and wash clothes are provided. Wash clothes do seem easier to use on the initial meconium stools. As these early black stools are sticky and difficult to clean up. After discharge, baby wipes are fine. While some infants are irritated by wipes this is extremely rare.

In the first few weeks, I would recommend a preventative diaper rash cream as many children do get diaper rashes at this time. We have tried several types but my favorite brand is Desitin (it must work as I can’t seem to get it off my hands).
